Star plants of the Harlow Carr show 2023

These are the plants that won the special awards at the Autumn Cactus and Succulent Show at Harlow Carr 2023.

Best Succulent In Show was won by BCSS president Graham Charles for his Adromischus nanus plant, which was in a 15cm pot but considered huge for this species!

Best Cactus In Show was won by BCSS membership secretary Simon Snowden for a Copiapoa solaris.

The Copiapoa classes were incredibly competitive with the 2nd place plant in this class winning a special Award of Merit certificate.  A small number of these certificates are given out at shows to standout plants or exhibits.  6 were given out at the Harlow Carr show – 3 to cacti, 2 to succulents and 1 to a creative exhibit in the Unusual Container class.

Matucana weberbaueri:

Parodia magnifica, one of the most admired and photographed plants in the show! Owned by Barry from York branch and over 50 years old.

Pachphytum oviferum.  Like the Parodia, this is an incredibly popular species that might be one of the first plants many of us owned when we first got into the hobby, so it’s good to see an award-winning specimen that has reached a huge size.

Agave victoriae-reginae:

The winner of the Unusual Container class, an amazing miniature succulent landscape planted on a huge piece of wood by Jo from Bradford branch.

It’s great to see a creative exhibit recognised with a special Award Of Merit, as well as rare or old specimen plants.

The show will be back next year, this time on Sunday 22nd September 2024.
